ARGallery
A gallery to go
Problem
How do I know what a picture will look like on my wall before I hang it?
Solution
An iOS app which lets users place artworks on their walls and create custom galleries using Augmented Reality. The app offers new possibilities for galleries and exhibitions to stage artworks.
Concept
“What would this picture actually look like on my wall?”
After being asked this question repeatedly, I came up with the idea of developing an app that allows users to hang pictures in Augmented Reality.
I placed particular emphasis on an easy-to-use and comprehensive interface, so that using the app does not require extensive prior knowledge.
App Icon
To design an impactful icon I focused on the app’s core function: placing virtual images in physical spaces.
Thanks to the deliberately chosen P3 display color profile, the icon stands out clearly among other app icons.
Implementation
Since it's an iOS app, I developed it using Swift. The app was built using Apples ARKit framework and the RealityKit framework.
In its current version, users can choose from a selection of different images, place them on their walls using Augmented Reality and edit them.
ARGallery also uses Object and People Occlusion on newer devices for more realistic results.
Outlook
During the initial testing phase, I observed that this tool opens up new possibilities for galleries and museums to stage exhibitions. It creates a new kind of space for artworks, their audiences and potential buyers.
The full release will include the ability to hang photos directly from the camera roll, as well as a SelectView that displays size specifications and editing options for the placed images.
This project is still in development. All updates will be posted here or on GitHub.
